The Pretty Reckless did it again with their third studio release, Who You Selling For! The new album is just a reminder of what a genuinely great band they really are. Long gone are the days where people could simply brush off Taylor Momsen as nothing more than “that Gossip Girl actress trying to be a singer”. She’s proven herself to be one of the best mainstream soulful singers of today. Her vocals are so rich, so full of soul you can’t deny her talent or as I prefer, her gift.
Listening for the first time to Who You Selling For, I just sat there thinking to myself that she must be channeling Janis Joplin and a little Faith Hill (who also shares in rich vocal stylings). I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and this album is so reminiscant of the raw soul filled blues music of that time yet with an updated modern rock twist, but not so much that it loses that genuine feel to the sound or to confuse the listener. The collaboration in writing between Momsen and Ben Phillips (guitar) shows they clearly know their sound and how to keep it real and deep. The lyrics throughout this album are deep and thought provoking. Of course you don’t have to be a deep thinker to enjoy the music either, this is a great album to just enjoy. If you don’t feel the vibe put forth through the music, you are going to want to double check to make sure you are listing to the same album I am talking about. I don’t think there will be too many people who can’t enjoy this one.
It’s no surprise with songs like “Take Me Down”, “Oh My God” and “Living In The Storm” that the album is doing so well on the charts. Even after 18 weeks, the single Take Me Down is still in the Top 5 of the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts whilst singles from notable artists like Ghost, Green Day, Thrice, Alter Bridge and the likes sit behind them in the charts. As I said, there is no denying that The Pretty Reckless mean business and that they have the talent to match their drive.
With Who You Selling For you are going to enjoy experiencing some good rockin’ blues tracks and some that slow it down a bit where you can really take in Momsen’s vocals. She’s raw and vulnerable throughout this entire album. The instrumentals themselves are full of ripping blues chords and great riffs, but also share the space with the unplugged acoustic counterparts. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this album today. You will really enjoy it!
